Banana Shrub (Port Wine Magnolia)

Plant portrait: A glossy evergreen shrub whose modest cream-to-purple-edged flowers release an improbable fragrance of ripe banana, bubblegum, or fruit candy.

Garden rhythm: Spring-blooming shrub with possible repeat flowers; part sun, shelter, acidic drained soil, even moisture, protection from severe North Texas cold.

Garden companions: Beetles and other insects may visit magnolia flowers.

Worth noticing: This tree is very sensitive to North Texas weather but we've been able to keep it alive for about 10 years or so. It's about 10 feet tall and because it's so sensitive to heat or cold and even the soil, there have been seasons where it has not produced any flowers. However, when it does produce flowers, it is such a delicious burst of bubblegum and fruit smells to hit the air. It's absolutely wonderful!
