Red Spider Lily

Red Spider Lily

Lycoris radiata

Plant portrait: Brilliant red flowers rise suddenly on bare stems, their curled petals and long stamens appearing almost overnight.

Garden rhythm: Bulbous perennial; typically flowers in late summer or fall, with foliage at another season. Sun to part shade, drained soil.

Garden companions: Flowers may receive butterflies and other insects.

Worth noticing: Its surprise emergence inspired the name “resurrection lily” in some places. Bulbs are toxic if eaten.
